Black Bear Scout Notes

by PS Scouting Dept. updated 9:02pm 6/27/2022

Mason Huffstickler MIF/RHP 2023 (Southern Athletics 2023 Orange)

As a pitcher, he sat 83 and was up to 85. Decent command and good arm action, athletic build and also made some good defensive plays from the mound.

Ryan Barnes
INF 2023 (Home Plate Chili Dogs)

Shifty MIF type build who is defensively clean and baseball savvy. Drew plenty of QABs and walks. Great runner with a feel for the barrel and a swing that works on a great path.

Cian Copeland
RHP/1B 2024 (Knights Knation)

6'3" 205lb frame w/strong lower half. Outstanding mound presence. 6 IP 0 ER 2 hits in the semifinal game. Sat 80-82 w/CB in upper 6s. Also peeped a hit tool from the left side this week.

TJ Thacker
1B 2024 (Home Plate Chili Dogs)

Raw bat that has some juice. Easy projection on the 6’2” 175lb frame. Moves well overall. Notched a loud double ~350’ off the wall at JB Owens stadium.

Dominic Bello
C 2023 (Scorpions 2023)

Strong arm from behind the plate. Threw out a couple of runners and liked to back pick. Makes solid contact, good swing, barrels balls and is patient, works the count well. Overall a solid catcher who is dependable behind the plate w/some feel in the box.

Talan Mcconnell
C 2024 (5 Star Carolina)

6'1" 170lbs. Big homerun on Sunday. Ripped another one in the same game through the pull side for a single. Above average defensively. Strong arm behind the plate.

Chase Mckelvey
MIF 2023 (Scorpions 2023) Headsy player with speed, and has pop. Laced a line drive off the left field wall. Any air on it and it would’ve been gone. Good range in the field and an aggressive base runner.

Chas Welch
OF 2023 (Southern Athletics 2023 Orange)

Solid hitter with pop. Clean swing, quick hands. Unleashed on an inside pitch for a solo home run that got out in a hurry.

Devon Lee
INF 2023 (Home Plate Chili Dogs)

Versatile gamer who seems to have the ability to do well at any position in the field. Up to 85 off the bump with sneaky life. MIF college build with added mass. Aggressive offensive profile and mentality in the box. High OBP guy who makes things happen.

Cooper Crow
OF/RHP 2024 (Home Plate Chili Dogs)

Perfect through 5IP and continued a no-hitter through 6.2 IP. FB was up to 80 sitting high 7s. Worked in a BB that consistently found the zone. Pitched to contact the whole outing. Great tempo and rhythm. Also can produce with the bat. Good baseball genes.

Liam O’Neil 1B 2023 (Burn Atlantic Navy 2023) O’Neil is a man child who swings it from the left side of the plate. The ball legitimately just flys off his bat as he showed off his smooth lefty stroke. Kid should be a high follow leading into his senior year.

Brett Dennis
RHP/3B 2023 (Burn Atlantic Navy 2023)

Dennis is a hidden power arm based out of Jacksonville, Florida. He has been up to as high 92 on the mound and you can definitely see he has a live arm only getting up to 89 during the classic. High follow as he goes uncommitted into his senior year of high school.

Donovan Rabiei
LHP 2023 (Burn Atlantic Navy 2023)

Was very impressive on the mound during the Black Bear Classic. The crafty lefty based out of Jacksonville, FL not only displayed pitch-ability, but also surprised with some life on his fastball at times (T85).

Zach Bender
OF 2025 (Baseball Rebellion 2024 Scout Team)

Bender was probably one of the most impressive players in the box all tournament. Showed ability to consistently get his barrel out front and present athletic actions throughout his swing.

Ryan Honeycutt
C 2024 (Baseball Rebellion Scout Team)

This 6’6” framed catcher based out of North Carolina obviously stuck out just off the pure eye test. He had some decent actions in the box, albeit having some rawness. Won't be surprised if we start hearing his name sooner than later, definitely a high follow for his class.

Pablo Torres
RHP 2022 (South Florida Bandits Prospect Team)

The Bethune Cookman commit Torres put on show at the Black Bear Classic. He showed off his whippy arm and got up as high as 93 this week, a really impressive showing.

Victor Figueroa
1B 2022 (South Florida Bandits Prospect Team)

The Florida International University commit is the definition of a power LHH. The 6’7” framed power hitter based out of Florida absolutely crushed balls at all times this week.

Louis Rodriguez
OF 2023 (South Florida Bandits Prospect Team)

This kid just hits and hits and hits some more every time you watch him. He had himself a tourney and was very fun to watch in the box.

Nicholas Guachione
C 2023 (Rip City National)

The uncommitted 6’3” catcher based out of Pittsfield, Massachusetts had everyone at the edge of their seats all week when he stepped to the box. He displayed some raw power at the dish and his athleticism behind it as he was a brick wall back there.

Jack Texter
RHP 2024 (Ohio Elite Scout Team 2024 (Young))

Jack is a very impressive arm based out of Columbus, Ohio. Effortlessly showed off his live arm with his fastball ranging from 82-84 T85, and keeping hitters honest by flipping in a breaking ball for a strike, he was tough to hit. Texter stands out for his class.

Chase Arrington
RHP 2023 (Canes Scout Team 17U)

Arrington is an interesting arm that should be followed. He had a good showing on the mound with some really good arm actions with his fastball topping at 86.

Jack Gibson
LHP 2023 (Canes Scout Team 17U)

Gibson was a very impressive lefty arm with a bulldog mentally. His FB ranged from 83-84 T85 and had a whip out slider at times. He is worth the follow going into his senior year.

Trevor Lucas
SS 2023 (Canes Scout Team 17U)

Fundamentally, SS based out of North Carolina was an absolute gamer. This fast twitched middle infielder was a nuisance on the base paths and showed off a high smash factor from the lead off spot.

Jared Vega
SS 2024 (Dodgers Scout Team 2024)

When you take a look at this young middle infielder, he just sticks out due to his physicality at his age. Smooth actions defensively and above average arm across the diamond.

Seth Laureano
INF 2024 (Dodgers Scout Team 2024)

Definitely had an interesting swagger to him. Smooth and carries himself well on the field.

Eloy Suarez
C 2024 (Dodgers Scout Team 2024)

Suarez is the definition of a field general for his team. He controlled his pitching staff and showed off his smooth lefty stroke not to mention his electric hands. The catcher based out of Illinois is worth a follow.

Cole Manetti
C 2024 (HP Chili Dogs - Dombrowsky 16U)

Manetti is a 6’2” catcher who is fundamentally sound behind the dish and has a strong arm to back it up. He displayed some 2.0 and 2.1 pop times during the classic and laced balls all tourney.

Jackson Martin
OF 2023 (Southern Athletics 2023)

Really nice swing from the left side, good hitter. Hit a moonshot 3 run HR to LF. Good range in the OF. Barrels balls. Had a great 2nd game of a double header.

Landon Penfield
INF 2024  (Canes Scout Team 16U)

Has a really simple swing from the left side that packs a punch. Quick hands and finds the barrel. Solid defensively at short. Laced a ball to left center for a 2B that showed he has power to the opposite side.

Erick Soto C 2024 (Florida Sluggers 2024 Blue)

Solid C with ability to catch and throw, moves well laterally, good transfers, solid arm, avg hitter with power to the pull side, strength and leverage at the plate. He can definitely catch and handle a staff.

Nicolas Bermudez
OF 2024 (Florida Sluggers 2024 Blue)

High energy player, gamer, plays the game hard, looks to create havoc on the base paths, can run a bit, quick twitch, aggressive at the plate, short swing with a quick back side, gap to gap with sneaky pull side power, avg defender with and avg arm with carry, he’s quick with quick first step. Solid player, small but packs a huge punch.

Andon Gray
MIF 2024 (Scorpions Purple 2024)

Lean athletic frame with room for weight Strength gain, solid defender, good actions, good hands and feet, always has timing & rhythm when fielding a ground ball, good internal clock, avg arm, displays good approach, looks to drive the baseball, projects well going forward.

Joey Chitla
MIF 2024 (5 Star Carolina 2024 National)

Solid player with ability to play the game, gamer type player, plays hard, makes the routine play as a defender, grinds out AB’s, double guys, runs well, instinctive on the base paths. Player who leads by example.

Griffin Booth
C 2025 (US Elite Mid Atlantic West 2025)

advanced Catcher for his age, can definitely defend & throw, receives very well, moves laterally very well also, above avg arm strength for his age. Well rounded catcher. At the plate he looks hitterish however needs to gain strength and weight. It’s a wristy hitter, hands are quick. Definitely a player who has a chance at a power 5 if he develops well.

Alex Robinson
OF 2024 (Canes Scout Team 16U)

OF with a different sound to his bat, LH with leverage to his swing, strength produced from his back side, good swing with quick hands. Defensively he’s a corner OF with an avg arm for a HS player. Definitely has upside going forward.

Chance Kennedy
MIF 2025 (Southern Athletics 2025 Orange)

Quick hands, has some pop and is a gritty player. Went 2-2 with a line drive RBI triple to right center yesterday. Good runner. Had a line drive single for an RBI as well. B2B skills are there and swings with authority.

Davis Anders
C/1B 2023 (Southern Athletics 2023 Orange)

The kid can just plain out hit. Anders hit an absolute nuke to deep left center for a 2 run shot this week. Simple approach and quick powerful swing.

Bo Seymour
RHP 2023 (Wolfpack Baseball)

RHP with a deceptive delivery, long arm swing, tall lean with long extremities, 82-84 with life, FB plays up, gets on hitters quick, also runs a 2 seam from time to time, SLV 69-71 with late action when right. Seymour doesn’t endure hard contact. Still needs strength & weight gain. Development but he’s going to throw harder and his stuff is going to get better.

Mikah Conner
MIF 2023 (Carolina White Sox 2023)

Athletic player with tools, quick bat with a good swing path, it’s quick A to B to make contact, avg raw power to the pull side. Defensively he needs development, has foot speed & actions, internal clock needs to be worked on, arm is slightly below average however it’s due to lack strength. It’s bat above everything else for Conner.

Luke Earnhardt
LHP 2023 (Southeast Sox 17U)

Sat 81-82 and was up to 84, hides the ball well; has a sneaky delivery. Ball gets on the batter quick and his breaker is efficient and has some good movement and was up to 71.

Ranfty Nuñez
OF 2025 (Florida Sluggers 2025)

Fun player to watch, he’s energetic, plays the game hard, displays raw power, quick bat & a hittable approach, above avg runner, solid defender w/ a solid arm w/ carry. Player to keep an eye on going forward.

Jake Epstein
1B 2023 (Southeast Sox 17U)

Has a super smooth and powerful swing from the left side. Crushed a no doubt home run to right field. Medium frame guy that finds a way to put the barrel on the ball.

Seth Wright
MIF 2023 (Southeast Sox 17U)

The perfect kind of gritty player you want at the top of the lineup. Has great speed and barrels balls up. Battles at the plate, works count well, flies around and gives it his all. Stole home with ease on a lefty in the stretch.

Dylan Alonso
RHP 2023 (Southeast Sox 17U)

Pounds the zone, sat 88-89 and was up to 91. Has a CB with some massive break. Has potential to sit low to mid 90s, good arm action and clean delivery.

Sam Johnson
RHP 2023 (CBC Baseball Club)

Large frame, arm quickness, above avg CH, needs development, FB 85-87 with some heaviness, CH 80-81 with arm side fade, SLV 70-73 with depth when right. RH who needs development, velo will climb, SLV will get more consistent, delivery works however needs to finish, it’s a one piece arm action. Most importantly the CH is above average when right which means everything else will play up.

James Green
OF 2023 (Wow Factor Coastal)

Lean, wiry, and strong OF with above avg speed. Has range and can cover the gaps. Offensively LHH gap to gap type hitter, runs into some power pull side from time to time. Speed is his carrying tool. There is more to see as he grows into his body and gets stronger.

Ike Schmidly
OF 2023 (Wow Factor Coastal)

RHH with a good swing, timing & rhythm at the plate, strength is near, long athletic frame with room for growth. Avg OF with an avg arm. The projection and upside he has makes him intriguing.

Hayden Hester
UTL 2023 (Carolina White Sox 2023)

Ability to play multiple positions, good actions and foot work, avg arm, make the routin play. Has leverage to the bat with bat speed, above avg runner, looks hitterish at the plate, aggressive. Good athlete overall, I like what he brings to the table as he gets older.

Juan Garcia
SS 2024 (Florida Sluggers 2024 Blue)

SS with the ability to play the game, good actions, good arm, solid defender, quick bat with power to the pull side, loose hands, looks to drive the baseball, has a feel for the barrel, aggressive. Good athlete that knows the game.

Ivan Mebrero
OF 2024 (Florida Sluggers 2024 Blue)

OF with a good approach at the plate, aggressive hitter looking to do damage, uses his hands well, quick hands, good bat plane, avg OF with an avg arm. It’s bat over all else.

Jackson Henderson
OF 2024 (Canes Scout Team 16U)

large frame, strong, athletic build, strength to the bat, good approach, quick hands, ability to drive the baseball the other way with authority, defensive corner OF with ability to get into the gaps. Again he’s a power bat above all else.

Christopher Donaldson
RHP 2024 (Canes Scout Team 16U)

RHP with a 2 pitch mix, 86-88 with firmness to his FB with downhill ride, definitely has feel for a breaking ball at 71-74 with late hard action. He can spin it. Good delivery and arm action, definitely strength in the body, specially in the lower half. There is arm Quickness, on both FB & CB. An arm who has an idea about pitch ability.

Andy Roman III
C 2023 (Atlanta Blue Jays)

6'3" 205lbs. Big time power potential. Moves fast and in the right direction. Fundamentally sound behind the plate. Sub 1.9 consistently. Blocked well and received above average. Not much more you can ask for in a catcher prospect. Should have competitive schools interest.

Peyton Youngbar
MIF 2025 (WHC Renegades Red)

A bat that could be special. Projection is there at 6’2” and 170. Already has some twitch and present bat speed. Be on the watch for a hitting breakout the next year or two.

Jack Newman
1B 2023 (Florida Dodgers Scout Team)

Powerful LHH with a poised approach. Segments body well and is just fluent overall with his swing. Triple on day 2 was smoked. Mature presence, a lot to like moving into his senior year.

Jarrette Bonet
RHP/1B 2023 (Prospect Factory VD - Puerto Rico)

Legit 2-way prospect. Up to 90 from the bump, and simply not the guy you want to face as a pitcher. Violent hacks with a chance to homer at any time. TOPPS alumni.

Zachary Gaydos
RHP 2024 (Charlotte Megastars 2024)

Sat low 8s and topped 86; worked off of it well with CB at 72. Whippy arm stays on a good track throughout. 6'2" 170. Good student.

Lujack Cole
RHP 2025 (Blue Chip Bulls 15U)

Projectable arm with a lot of upside, 83-85 with firmness & Heaviness to the FB, secondary can use some improvement however it’s a quick arm with strength in the body. Velo will definitely climb in the next couple of years, I like what this arm can become with some development. He’s a big kid with arm strength.

Nathan Wines
RHP 2025 (API Cavs)

6'4" 180lbs. H3/4 slot with funky off speed stuff; especially the hammer BB. FB 85 T87 with excellent BB at 72; CH 76. An incredible showing at Black Bear. Drew a pretty decent crowd and performed. D1 follow.

Fidel Alviar
RHP 2023 (FBH Angels)

Up to 87 sitting mid 8s. Mature and competitive presence. Slow yet deliberate delivery.  RPMs at ~2250 for FB and ~2450 for BB at 76. Expect more velo from him with more polished actions.

Charlie Alonso
OF 2023 (Midland Swarm)

Summer tour continues to go well for Alonso. XBHing machine that needs to be on the radar of competitive college programs.

Austin Hardy
LHP 2024 (Carolina Cubs 2024 National)

LHP with some zip on the ball. Sat 85-86 and was up to 88. Has a CB with sharp breaking movement which was up to 74. CH had a decent horizontal AS break and was up to 77. Quality performance with stat line:4IP, 5K 0ER.

Carter Watson
OF 2023 (WHC Renegades Red)

Good build, standing at 6’4”. Lots of pop with his bat, clean swing. Went 2-4; 1 RBI, 1 BB, and a double in game 1. 1-2 1R 1BB in game 2.

James Raidt
RHP 2023 (Time To Sign)

Duke commit. 6'3" 185lbs. +CB with 14" of HB and 17" of VB at ~2875 RPMs; CB 76-78. FB T91 sat 88. Deceptive; pitches got on batters.

Alex Calabro
OF 2023 (FL Florida Dodgers Scout Team 2023)

Hard nosed player with a plus work ethic. 6.6 runner, baseball instincts check out, plus student. Good follow into his senior year at Creekside HS. Look for a huge breakout year.

Elijah Sanders
LHP 2024 (Carolina Knights 16U)

2-way guy who stood out at the plate. Athletic build. Compact stroke that stays on the ball. Actions overall are very polished. Has a good foundation moving forward.

Jayden Garcia
3B 2024 (CBU Clubhouse 2024)

Consistently produces offensively. Scissor kick with adjustability and power up and down the zone. Going to be one of the best power bats in Hernando county his upcoming junior year.

Jacob Thomas
LHP/1B 2023 (Florida Dodgers Scout Team 2023)

Another 2-way that stood out this week. Had a couple of timely hits, but really stood out on the mound. Frame checks out at 6’2 215. Has worked 84-86 with the heater and sat in the low 70s with the BB. Plenty more velo in the tank. Velo should start to unveil itself in the coming year.

Gabe Graulau
OF 2025 (FTB Rockets)

Grand slam on day 1 of Black Bear to take the lead by 1. The next day he was short of completing the cycle by a HR. Just impressive with his age and frame. Going to be legit with added mass. 6'1" 165lbs. 6.8 60. Advanced swing for age and will continue to trend up.

Devin Dizon
OF 2023 (Florida Dodgers Scout Team 2023)

6.5 60 that translates to in-game actions. Legit switch hitting CF.Uber athletic. TOPPS invite. Had a good junior HS season, and is projected to blow that away his senior year. Work ethic is there and has already proved to make leaps and bounds over time.

Jose Gonzalez
RHP 2023 (Prospect Factory VD - Puerto Rico) RHP w/ a 2 pitch mix, 85-88 w/ life, an occasional arm side run, CB 73-75 but flashes it more as SLV. Lean wiry strong frame, athletic, good delivery & arm action, fast arm, attacks hitter with his FB, uses the Breaking ball as an out pitch.

Fabian Torres
OF 2023 (Prospect Factory VD - Puerto Rico)

LHH who projects well, definitely has tools, good swing w/ strength to it, swing is slightly uphill but it’s only natural from a LHH, quick bat w/ looseness to it, defensively he’s avg w/ a he range & arm & run.

Gabe Glover
CF 2025 (NLB 15U)

Athletic player w/ ability, level swing keeps barrel in the zone for some time, loose hands, quick bat, slightly above average runner, can score from 2B. Defensively avg in CF, w/ an above avg arm. He’s young and hasn’t filled out yet, his actions are there however body hasn’t developed. I believe he’ll be an above average player once he starts to mature.

Makhi Mills
MIF 2025 (Naturals 15U)

Exciting player to watch, electric, plays the game hard, aggressive all the way around, can run, defend and switch hit, power won’t come for while however looks to make contact, arm strength is slightly below average. Nonetheless he can play the game.
